coilovers - clunking noise

Hello,
a local tuning shop installed Stasis coilovers and since then I have been experiencing noise issues. At first these were clicking noises from front upper support points (heard only in temps over 50F) which have been eliminated by the installer but I continue hearing clunking noises from the rear suspension areas when going at low speed over bumps, patholes, and other road imperfections. The perf of the suspension is fantastic on smooth roads/highways. I expected a stiffer and less comfortable behavior on rough surfaces but the clunking noise is not what I am willing to put up with as a price for better smooth surface handling and improved look.
Has anyone else experienced similar noise effects after installing coilovers on A5/S5 or other vehicles? has this been resolved or is this part of the package?
Thx much.

This is standard practice for coilovers. Some are worse than others as I don't get any rear clunk, just front.
Most clunking happens during slow speed extreme turns because the coilover sleeves are at max friction.

It's not gonna go away or be fixed so you have to decide whether you want to live with it or not....

Are you serious? I haven't noticed any, but now I'll be listening. I do think the drop has exaggerated the steering wheel wobble, which I had before hand. Wasn't this supposed to be fixed on mid-year '09 models?

The KW's seem to be very mild compared to others, but it worsens over time. When I rode in Tx's car, I only noticed it once or twice which was less than mine....

You got the vibrations? At what speed and how pronounced???

Mine are quiet

Yeah, I remember that day I took you for a quick spin in the car at the car meet when you were back in town. I recall hearing a slight noise coming from the front, and then you pointed out that noise was from the coilovers. However, since that time, I honestly have not noticed mine making any noises when going over speed bumps or bumpy roads. And trust me, I would have noticed because I get easily annoyed by creaks and noises in a car.

I don't buy that generalization that the noises from coilovers will get worse over time because I have not noticed any further noises in mine as time has gone by. My coilovers have fully settled at this point, so I'm wondering if perhaps those noises sometimes just occur during the settling in period. Back when you rode in my car, I had just recently had them installed. So, that would make sense.

stasis

My stasis setup is quiet. I only have 750 miles, but no noises. You may want to contact stasis to see if adj. can correct issue.

I have been hearing a clunking noise from my rear. I think it is just the offside rear.

It does it as I pull into my drive (very slight kerb) and down normal smooth roads. It doesnt seem to do it on speed bumps or uneven roads. Indeed, apart from my drive it almost seems random. Although its only tends to be speeds below 30mph.

Its not a loud noise. Its a a muffled clunk. Something similar to having an item in the boot that is moving around and hitting the side of the boot (not the moving noise but the clunk of hitting the side). You cannot hear it outside of the car.

KWs replaced under warranty

You may be interested to know that this Weds (rescheduled from Thurs due to the weather), I'll be having both rear KWs replaced under warranty. For months I'd been plagued by a clonking from the rear of the car - initially Audi, then APS, said it was the exhaust. I lived with it but pretty much hated every minute of driving the car - and eventually became more and more convinced that it was suspension related. It was constant, particularly noticeable at low speeds but present in all conditions. As DD said, sounded like something was loose in the boot, specifically like the spare wheel was loose or there was something rattling around in the wheel well. It wasn't/there wasn't.

Eventually, a couple of weeks ago during some exhaust work, I persuaded APS (who were still convinced it was exhaust and would be fixed as a matter of the course of the work they were doing) to drive the car around the car park whilst the rear section was off. Sure enough, the noise persisted and Nathan then traced it to a failed lower mount on the o/s rear KW - essentially, where the bottom part of the shock is bolted to the lower suspension 'bit' (wishbone, trailing arm, waddoo I know?), the metal piece around the bush had split, resulting in lateral movement of an inch or so end-to-end and causing the noise.

It was jury-rigged with cable ties (what can't they do?) and the replacements will go on this week, weather permitting......

Ess5ive, that its interesting as I was at APS a few weeks back and my exhaust was adjusted because it was thought that the it was that which was causing the knocking.

I also checked the spare wheel thinking it was lose (it was) but it wasnt that. It sounds exactly like that sort of thing.

I will email Ed to tell him the knocking noise is still occurring. Mine has actually got a bit worse recently and there was a louder, almost a bang than a clunk, during the week. I wonder if it was that splitting totally. I have done about 5000 miles on mine.

Sounds like it. I never had any rear clunk with multiple coilover setups over the years..

As far as lubing, you lube the coilover threads which is where most of the friction occurs. As the lube wears, the friction and clunk becomes more prevalent.

Interesting comments - I have had an increasingly loud clunk from the rear right hand side, audible on rough surfaces at low speed and which I had assumed was a loose exhaust mounting. I have also started to notice a creaking from the suspension when mounting traffic calming humps, similar to the 'dry spring' sound that I used to have from an old MGB.

Thanks!

Ess, very helpful... thanks for posting those photos with details on exactly where the issue lies. This could come in quite handy for any of us in the KW crowd who may experience this issue in the future.

Anyone with similar experience with H&R coil-overs?
Sizzle has experienced this with his H&R coilovers.

For what it's worth, my KW V2's haven't made any noises since when I initially had them installed. (See my post #6 above.)

Mine was back at APS yesterday and Ed is feeding back to KW the problem.

The likely resolution in my case will be a third set of coilovers. This time though the threading will be increased to allow the height to be moved up more than it currently allowed or a different spring will be used. I have to wait until Ed has discussed the case with KW in Germany. I dont know if they will make mine a one-off fix or factor it into future production.

The nearside rear in particular is the problem one. There is a 3mm difference in height and its at the highest it can go now. The feeling is that if you drive on rural roads (uneven and guttering not up to scratch) and/or you have speed humps, the springs settle more than those that are driven on better quality roads.

Sounds like you guys are the "Beta" testers for the A5/S5 suspension systems. Man, I knew the economy is bad but having you pay to become testers???? :D :D :D
