Default How long to find a dipstick!!

Had my 2.0d a week now and thought I'd give the oil a check. I know there is an electronic 'gauge' you can view, but I prefer to trust a good, old-fashioned piece of metal, sticking into the sump.

Searched everywhere under that bonnet. For the first time in my life, I had to get the manual out. Unless I'm seriously missing something....it's not got one

While I'm sure the electronic version will be fine...haven't Audi heard of the 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'.

there is definitely no real dipstick under the bonnet.
only the electronic reading in the MMI
make sure you follow the guidelines for using it.
level ground, warm engine and wait 2 minutes after stopping the engine.

Yes, and I would go and buy a real one, use the MMI as a guide.

Despite following the manual meticulously I have seen the MMI gauge all over the place on my last one. From 1/4 full one day to full the next

Trouble is, if you decide to top up at 1/4 full, and in fact it is full, the consequence is that you overfill the engine which is pretty much as bad as too little oil.

They're are about a tenner from the dealer.

And thanks for the reminder, must get one for the new car

It's a definite must to have an oil dipstick. Just relying on the electronic sensor to tell you when the oil is low is sometimes not always accurate. Plus, the dipstick will tell you how the oil looks as well.

Might be a silly question. But if I got a 'real' dipstick, whereabouts does it go?

On the 2.0TFSI Petrol it is here (Note I do not have a dipstick, this is a plastic cap than needs to be removed to add a dipstick):

if you were to replace the plug with a real dipstick, do you think you can still close the bonnet properly, as you will have a rather large yellow ring on top of the dipstick ??

Yes you can still close the bonnet after you installed a dipstick. I have one in my A5 coupe 3.0TDI from factory.

I had a problem with the electronic indicator, it started bleep-ing while I as driving getting up a mountain! Not a good thing to happen It was full after all

Spoke with the dealer and he's adamant you can't buy a dipstick for a 2.0d model. Unfortunately, I didn't have the part number on me. But he said even if I did, they don't sell or stock them.

I check mine on the MMI fairly regularly and haven't missed not having a real Dipstick.

In answer to the Original Question, there are loads of 'Dipsticks' wandering around Westminster at the Moment.

Just out of curiosity at what point does the car ask for more oil to be added. My MMI is showing that the oil level is half full and itís okay. I thought it asked you to add a 1 litre when it does ask. By my calculations I could add 2.25 litres to bring it back up to full!!! Anyway I am buying a dipstick tonight as I donít want the engine to go pop for the sake of 10 quid!

I contacted a dealer in the UK and they told me they don't sell dipsticks! Does the Kent dealer sell? Are there any other UK dealers who have sold to someone? Any help very much appreciated!

Yes and no. My dealership parts department does sell them, but they do not hold a stock at the dealership. He has ordered one for me which should be in by Thursday!

Thats pretty consistent with the dealers this side of the Atlantic too Chris - I spoke to 3 here on the East coast, all of them had to order. Got mine in a couple of days.

Not sure about the Diesel, but here in Cyprus the dealer's mechanics check the oil with a dipstick and not with the on-board computer. At least that's what they did when I got the aforementioned misreading from the computer, and said that misreadings are nothing to worry about and could occur at any time - hence, this means for me that if you want to be sure, use a dipstick!

Chris - Would that happen to be East Kent Audi? (I Googled "Audi Kent") If so, I 'll send a friend over to order one

No I think that is the Canterbury one? Anyway this is where I ordered mine from Maidstone Audi.

Note though I have not actually got the dipstick yet. They could ring me before Thursday and tell me they cannot get one! I'll report back Thursday evening once I have it in my hands!

Right then, popped in to Maidstone Audi on the way home and my oil dipstick was there waiting for me! Yey!

It is a proper metal one too with a visible min and max mark (not like the plastic one I had in the A4 with an odd balls and hoops arrangement on the end!!)

I shall fit it tomorrow and see how much oil is really in there!

Oh. Cost 12.60GBP

They do exist:

OEM Oil dipstick for 2.0 TDI: 03L 115 611 E
OEM Oil dipstick for 2.7/3.0 TDI: 059 115 611 AB

(Audi Part Numbers in bold)

Or is it that Audi just will not sell them to Joe Public?

This is true in the U.S. as well, in fact, it's a 'special tool' with a micrometer adjuster on the stick that cost USD120. I had a case where my hood (bonnet) latch apparently had "too much resistance" so that the circuit where the oil level is measured reported a faulty over full warning. btw, the temporary (until the new latch came in) solution to the faulty over full warning, was to disconnect the oil level sensor extension connector (power off, near the top left US-driver side radiator : on an S5) then reconnect - voilŗ, the warning cleared.

I too ordered a dipstick when my MMI behaviour changed and I lost confidence in it. Apparently, it's in the dealer awaiting me and I should collect it when the car goes in for some work next thurs.

Interestingly, I learned a while back that the main use of the dipstick tube is in fact to allow the dealer to suck the fluid out at oil-change time. In the spirit of quick'n'easy servicing, they generally don't even get the car off the ground, much less fiddle about with sump plugs! I was shown the pump they use for this purpose, in an attempt to dispel my obvious incredulity.......

Mines is orange, but it seems to fit fine in the location of my picture post above. i fitted mine this morning, my driveway slopes so it was reading right at the bottom (cold engine). I drove to work and waited two minutes as per the manual instructions. The MMI showed half full. I then checked on the stick and confirmed it as also half full.
